Battle Station: My Home Workspace

Brandon Rasmussen

So tonight I got side tracked looking at peoples workspaces. I love looking at how people set up their desk and work space. I am really fascinated with productivity. I feel that your desk and workspace is an extension of your productivity. I always seem to get more work done when my desk and office feel organized.

If you want to see what I am talking about just google workspaces and you will have hundreds of amazingly organized examples and I am sure some amazingly awful ones as well. So tonight I thought I would share my work space on Flipcaster.

This is my workspace that is located in our Kitchen and Dinning area of our house. He had a big open area that we were having a hard time figuring out what to do with. So we decided to make it a desk where our kids could do home work and I could work from. This way we could have the kids doing homework while we prepared dinner. It also was targeted at organizing all the piles of homework and papers that our kids were bringing home from school that seemed to be piling up all over our kitchen counters.

I found our Shelving / Desk at iKea. My wife and I liked the idea of adding storage at the same time as adding a functional workspace. The shelves are called Kallax. We got the desk add on and even added a smaller shelving unit to set to the side to give us a place to put our printer and document scanner. The thing I liked about this Ikea system was that we could add cupboards, drawers, and baskets to make it just the way we wanted. We also found two really cool leather dining chairs that worked perfect with this desk.

After we got the desk home and got it all assembled I went to Jones Paint and Glass and had them cut a large piece of glass for the desktop. I also found a bamboo lazy susan to put my iMac on so that you can turn the computer easily to ether side of the desk. This is nice with the kids so that they can take turns using the computer when they are setting on ether side of the desk. We can also turn it strait forward to face our dinning table if we are watching a movie in the kitchen.

It turned out to be a great project and really made a great workspace and storage area for our family. It has helped to keep us more organized and gives me a place to set up shop when I am working at home. This is probably the room that we spend the most time in as a family cooking and eating so it is awesome to have this battle station in the hub of our home.
